There are various qualities that a good office manager should posses. An office manager should always be fair to all members of the office staff. To have “Favorites”, someone they would also consider to be a friend outside of work, can cause a great deal of resentment within the work force and this can lead to a reduced productivity as well as having a detrimental effect on the atmosphere within your office. Each employee should be assured that they will be treated as an equal.
A positive trait for office managers to possess is good multitasking skills. It is important to know how to do multiple things at one time. The office manager should be prepared at all times to “Jump In” and work very hard. They should not merely just delegate the work and then sit back; this will lead to lack of respect within the rest of your team members.
A good office manager makes it possible for other employees to function efficiently.
The office manager should be a good listener and needs to be flexible. We all have domestic issues from time to time. You as the office manager will gain additional respect if you are sympathetic and supportive during these times.
A good office manager should have great organizational skills. By having good organizational skills this will ensure that the office is run smoothly and that everyone understands their role within the office.
The office manager should be a decisive “Decision Maker” and a “Strong Leader”. You should be pro-active rather than reactive. Remember to always give “Praise” when “Praise” is due. Remember to relay messages in a positive manner. Everyone makes mistakes and as office manager you should be aware of this and therefore not react too harshly when something goes wrong. An office manager must exercise sound judgement day in and day out.
A good office manager leads from the front and should be a “Great Motivator”. It is surprising what a positive effect you will have on your staff just by rewarding them with breakfast sandwiches or donuts on a Friday morning. This can and will build morale within your office.
Office managers who succeed have confidence, common sense, loyalty and the ability to motivate others.
Office managers should be “LEADERS BY NATURE”.
